the blazing dead center of july

hello everyone! sorry i skipped june, it was a fucked up month for sure. got to go to a session and record with the skeletonized boys yesterday which was great. somehow injured the deltoid muscle of my left arm so i'm hobbled today though. anyway here's some music i've been enjoying.

endless sound

dar stellabotta - into thin air
dar is a talented blueswoman who builds her own cigar box guitars. she recorded this album in my friend's living room and it's gritty and honest and unpolished in a wonderful way.

tomeka reid - dance! skip! hop!
this is a high-energy album featuring lots of absolutely killer interplay between the (often pizzicato) cello and guitar (by inimitable mary halvorson).

throat piss - existence as a grinding gear
sludge metal with sax, 7-string guitar, drums, and vox. you'd never think it'd work but this is a heavy, grimy album full of perverse sounds. highly recommended.

burmese - privileged
two drummers, two bassists, two vocalists. absolutely abrasive and sadistic. huge passages of piercing feedback punctuated with grind blasts and rabid animal chaos. from 2018, totally brutal.

jurg frey - clarinet quintet
in contrast to the hellscapes conjured by the previous two albums, this is an extended meditative chamber music piece with jurg frey's singular focus and attention to detail. his piece for combined string and saxophone quartets, continuité, fragilité, résonance blew my mind a while back and this is a great entry in his discography.

self-promotion section

i have four new solo albums available on aleatoric editions. you can view a live video of me performing a poem last week on youtube. the new elsinore cd is also available.

thanks everybody!!
